Extermination Camps
Extermination camps were only built for one purpose, which was to kill the Jews. There were a total of six extermination camps in the Holocaust, which killed 3 million Jews alone. Chelmno was the first of the extermination camps to be built in December of 1941 and finally shut down in July of 1944. About 152,000 Jews were gassed to death by using exhaust gas from trucks. Auschwitz-Birkenau served as both an extermination camp as well as a concentration camp from March 1942 until November of 1944 (Jewish Virtual Library, 2015).
