Adolf Hitler’s Early Life and Role in War World I
Adolf Hitler was on April 20th, 1889, about 65 miles east of Munich in a town called Braunau am Inn in Austria-Hungary. Adolf Hitler was baptized as a Catholic when he was born. Adolf’s father Alois Schickelgruber was a mid-level customs official. Adolf’s father legally changed his name in 1876 to Hitler. It is present in history that Adolf Hitler’s grandfather was Jewish (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, 2014b). Adolf Hitler is the fourth of six children to Alois Hitler and Klara Polzl. Hitler had three older siblings who passed away as infants and their names where Gustav, Ida, and Otto. When Adolf Hitler turned three, his family moved to Passau, Germany. There he acquired a very strong Bavarian accent instead of the Austrian German accent. In 1894, Adolf’s family relocated again to Leonding. In June of 1895, Hitler’s father retired to Hafeld where he farmed and kept bees. Adolf Hitler went to a state-owned school called Volksschule in the town of Fischlham. When Hitler’s family moved to Hafeld, it caused great tension with Hitler and his father about Hitler not wanting to conform to the extremely strict rules of Volksschule. After Adolf’s father’s farming failed in 1897, his family moved again to the town of Lambach. When Hitler was just eight years old he joined a church choir and even thought about becoming a priest. In 1898, after about a year of living in Lambach, they made a permanent move to Leonding. The death of Hitler’s brother Edmund in 1900 changed his personality completely. He changed from being very outgoing and very confident to morose and detached boy who would always fight with his father and teachers. After the move his had a very successful career in customs bureau and of course wanted Adolf to follow in his successful career path. Hitler later writes about how the trips to the customs office lead to horrible relationship between him and his father. Instead of sending Adolf to a normal high school and not allowing him to become an artist, his father sent him to a secondary school called Realschule in Linz. Hitler wrote his book Mein Kampf during his time in Realschule explaining how poorly he did in school hoping that is father would read it and let Hitler devote himself to his own dreams he had for his life. Adolf developed very strong loyalty towards Germany at a very young age just like many Austrian Germans did during that time period. After his father’s death on January 3rd, 1903 his grades began to get worse and worse so his mother allowed him leave the school after his father’s passing. Hitler later moved to Vienna with his mother after he finished secondary school. Hitler supported him and his mother by selling watercolor paintings after he was denied entry into Vienna’s Academy of Fine Arts because of his lack of academic credentials. On December 21st, 1907 his mother passed away with breast cancer right after he was rejected for the second time by the Vienna’s Academy of Fine Arts Hitler eventually went broke and had to live in homeless shelters (Wikipedia).
“Hitler moved to Munich, Germany in May 1913. He did so seeking to avoid arrest for evasion of his military service obligation to Habsburg Austria and financed by the last installment of his inheritance from his father” (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, 2014b, para. 1). He sold his watercolor paintings and his other drawings until World War I began. World War I gave Adolf Hitler direction in his life and gave him something that he could fully commit to. Hitler got very far in the military during World War I, he was promoted to corporal and received several medals during the time he served in World War I. Hitler had some very radical ideas during his time in the army during World War I. Hitler was partially blinded during a mustard gas attack and was sent to a military hospital where on November 11th, 1918; he discovered that the war had ended and Germany had lost. Hitler did not emotionally handle the end of the war and Germany losing well at all. He did not want to go home and return to normal life where he had neither any career nor idea where he wanted his life to go. The German army hired Hitler as someone who delivered private information to the German Workers’ Party (DAP).
On September 16th, 1919, Hitler issued his first written comment on the so-called Jewish Question. He defined the Jews as a race and not a religious community, characterized the effect of a Jewish presence as a “race-tuberculosis of the peoples,” and identified the initial goal of a German government to be discriminatory legislation against the Jews. The “ultimate goal must definitely be the removal of the Jews altogether. (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, 2014b, para. 7).
