What are Ghettos?
“Ghettos as places of forced residence designed to humiliate and exploit the Jews were set up under German occupation across Eastern Europe” (Benz & Hertzberg, 1999, p.44). During World War II, the Nazis forced the Jewish population to live in districts that were normally enclosed. There, the Jews were forced to live in these horrible living conditions. The main reason for ghettos was to separate the Jewish population from the non-Jewish population. There were at least a thousand ghettos that where located in the Soviet Union as well as Poland. The first Ghetto was created in Poland in October of 1939. The Germans established the ghettos to confine the Jews so the Germans could decide on how they wanted to exterminate the Jewish population. The largest ghetto was in Warsaw, where more than 400,000 Jews were forced to live in an area of 1.3 square miles. The Jews in the ghettos were required to wear badges or armbands and were forced to do forced labor (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, 2014b).
